A man has been arrested following a high-speed police pursuit in the Newry area this evening, during which he put two young children—aged 5 and 15—at serious risk.

The incident began when Road Policing Officers from Mahon Road attempted to stop a vehicle on the Armagh Road. The driver failed to comply, sparking a pursuit. During the chase, the suspect dangerously overtook vehicles and reached speeds of up to 120mph on the A1 dual carriageway.
Officers from Ardmore Station successfully deployed a stinger device, puncturing the car’s tyres. However, the driver continued for a short distance before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot. He was found shortly after, hiding in nearby bushes.

The man was arrested on suspicion of Dangerous Driving, Failing to Stop for Police, Driving Without a Licence, Driving Without Insurance, and Using a Vehicle in a Dangerous Condition—due to a smashed windscreen.

He has since been charged and is due to appear in court. Social Services have also been notified regarding the welfare of the two children who were in the vehicle at the time.
Police have reiterated their commitment to keeping dangerous drivers off the roads and ensuring public safety.
