A dramatic police pursuit unfolded in the Cloghogue area of Newry late last night, as officers from the Sprucefield Interceptor Team and Newry Local Policing Team (LPT) worked together to apprehend a suspect in a Blue BMW who had earlier failed to stop for police.

The vehicle was spotted by officers in the area and was successfully brought to a halt using a pre-emptive stinger deployment by Newry LPT. A brief pursuit ensued along Mountain Road, during which the suspect deliberately rammed a police vehicle in an attempt to evade capture. Two officers sustained injuries in the collision, and the police vehicle suffered significant damage. Despite this, the pursuit continued.
The suspect eventually abandoned the car and fled on foot across nearby fields. However, officers had anticipated such a move and had enlisted the assistance of the PSNI Dog Section. Police Dog Raya was deployed and quickly tracked the fleeing man, who was discovered hiding in a bush.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and is due to appear in court today Tuesday 20th May. He faces multiple charges including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, and possession of a Class B controlled drug. The vehicle involved has been seized.
Despite their injuries, the two officers involved in the collision remained on duty. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to targeting dangerous and illegal driving across the area.
